Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a man-made reservoir located at the Colorado River and is approximately 24 miles from the Las Vegas strip located in Las Vegas, Nevada and Arizona.
Swim, boat, hike, cycle, camp and fish at America’s first and largest national recreation area. With striking landscapes and brilliant blue waters, this year-round playground spreads across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys and two vast lakes. See the Hoover Dam from the waters of Lake Mead or Lake Mohave, or find solitude in one of the park's nine wilderness areas.
The lake has remained below full capacity since 1983 due to drought and increased water demand. As of April 2020, Lake Mead held 42.97% of full capacity with 11.3 million acre feet, up from 10.4 million acre feet in 2019 and the low of 9.8 million acre feet 2016. It has been smaller than Lake Powell (the second-largest US reservoir when both are full) since 2013.
