Episode Description
In 1982 Bruce Harpers' big band was a "kicks band", whose members were Las Vegas area musicians. "Kicks bands" were just that, bands that local musicians played in just for kicks at the musicians union bar room during the afternoon hours Monday through Friday, when the bar was closed, and/or "after hours" (10 p.m. - 6 a.m.) Wednesday through Saturday, usually unrehearsed. It was during those late night hours, when the bar was open, that it became a gathering place for the local players, and their guests, to enjoy each others company and listen to the musicians/bands "performing".
This "live" recording took place in the fall of 1982 at UNLV, made in the early days of the recording studio there. Curt Miller, who at the time was the teacher for the class that occupied that space, and an occasional member of Bruces' band on trombone, used the recording as an "in-class training session". The tunes to be recorded for this session were not announced to the band members until that day.
Unfortunately, I only had a couple of pictures of this band from 1982. The outdoor pictures are from a union-sponsored picnic the band played for at Lorenzi Park in Las Vegas, and some of the personnel that day were different from those who were involved with this recording. The other pictures in the video of myself and Greg Marciel are from years later.
