Jiu-Jitsu is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, or heavier opponent by using technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground to applying joint locks and incapacity holds to defeat the opponent. Jiu-Jitsu can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Sparring, commonly referred to as “rolling” within the Jiu-jitsu community, and live drilling play a major role in training. Jiu-Jitsu is first and foremost considered a martial art, then a sport. It is a means for promoting physical fitness and building character, and is a way of life for many practitioners.
